What is an affirmation?

An affirmation, by definition – is the process of affirming something (obvs).  For this reason, affirmations are often referred to as positive affirmations, because affirmation = affirmative = positive.

The way the human brain works has been studied closely for centuries and it has been found that the neural pathways in our brain can be changed – a process called neuroplasticity. This means we can literally reprogram our brains to change habits, behaviours and thought patterns that no longer serve us. The other magical thing about the brain is that what we perceive, the brain interprets as reality.

So whether we think about something negative happening, or are actually experiencing something negative happening, there is no difference to our brain – it is processed the same way.

And this is where affirmations can come in handy…

How to use affirmations in motherhood.

If we begin to repeat positive mantras and affirmations, we can ‘trick’ our brain into believing they’re true.  This leads to us experiencing the feel good chemicals and warm fuzzies that can result from those positive messages.

Even on the good days, motherhood can still kick your butt.  The days can feel long, monotonous at times and we can get caught in a rut of glass-half-empty thinking.

By starting each day with a positive affirmation, it helps to start rewiring those gloomy neural pathways, leading to an improved outlook, mood and experience of motherhood and parenting.

Pop a reminder into your phone to repeat your daily affirmation, to help you recalibrate through the day and get a little dose of positive energy.
